Asbury Park Press: The 8 Jersey bands you need to hear in 2017

December 29, 2016

2016 was a big year for the Asbury Park-based the Catching.

2017 should be even bigger.

The pop rock combo released an EP, "Teenage Fiction Part 1," saw the country on the High School Nation and DigiTour Winter tours, and became online stars thanks to their appearances on the live-steaming app YouNow in 2016.

Now, the guys - Holden Glazer, Marlboro, vocals and bass; Jake Farbman, Marlboro, guitar; Evan Hemwall, Eatontown, guitar; and Drew Stevens, Manalapan, drums, all in their teens - have just released a new single, "Lighter," from "Teenage Fiction."

The album was recorded in Nashville.

"We're doing the whole pop rock thing and we have pieces of that, and we have pieces of what we love, like classic rock music and pieces of current pop music," Glazer said.

The music is pop, but with enough melodic muscle and crunchy riffs to pound a few ear drums. Think of it as a update on the alt-rock of the Cars. MTV.com touted the Catching as one of the "9 Boy Bands that can fill the void of One Direction's Indefinite Hiatus."

They met when they were about 10 years old at the School of Rock. They've played tons of Stone Pony dates and now are bringing a new sound of the Jersey Shore to the rest of the country. OK, now do you think you should keep your eyes on these guys? That's why we're including the Catching (www.thecatching.com) on our list of the eight Jersey bands you need to hear in 2017.
